Lacemaking at Sudeley Castle
4th – 11th November 2011
Tutor Profile – Alex Stillwell

After teaching our first Sudeley Lacemaking course in 2009, we are pleased to welcome Alex back for 2011. During this course, Alex will be teaching a wide range of skills at any level to suit individual students from absolute beginners. As previously she will offer guidance in Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Honiton lace techniques; how to make and interpret patterns; designing and pattern drafting your own pieces. For those who would like to try something different, she will also offer Teneriffe techniques.
Alex is a very experienced and inspirational teacher who is highly regarded throughout the lace world. Her wealth of knowledge spans the techniques of all the English laces and she is widely acknowledged as the foremost expert on Teneriffe lace in Britain. Alex’s book “The Technique of Teneriffe Lace” was published in 1980 and she was instrumental in the revival of this style of lacemaking here. She is also very keen to encourage today’s lacemakers to “have a go” at design. She is a founder member behind the concept of the Lindfield Lacemakers and Designers, whose aim is to maintain and promote our industry’s long traditions of high standards in good design and well made pieces.
Alex has taught for and given many lectures and demonstrations to various organisations throughout the UK, Europe and the USA, and is booked to teach at the Australian Lace Convention in 2011. She is the author of eight books on lace and numerous articles, and is a prize winning designer and exhibitor. She has recently revised her "Illustrated Dictionary of Lacemaking" which is now in print and is working on a follow up to her very successful publication in 2006 of "Geometrical Bucks Point Lace" with a book on Floral Bucks.
In September 2010 Alex will be taking about “Inspirations for Lace” at the Lace Society’s Late Summer Lace Day at Lindfield near Haywards Heath. For further details of this event go to Lace Days under Events.
