Lacemaking at Sudeley Castle
19th – 26th November 2010
Tutor Profile - Sandi Woods
At our residential course in the Cotswolds this year we are looking forward to welcoming Sandi Woods to teach her very own unique style of working with coloured threads. There are two designs to choose from – Olive branch is suitable for the less experienced and intermediate levels, whereas Wavecrest is advised as being suitable for the very experienced only:
Olive Branch Wavecrest
Sandi trained as a fine artist, was taught lacemaking by Patricia Read and is an experienced and much travelled teacher. In 2002 she was one of the British tutors requested to teach a pre-Congress course for OIDFA when the Congress was held in Nottingham, England, and has taught as far afield as America, Canada, Switzerland, Holland, Denmark, Sweden and Ireland. All her patterns are designed and worked by her. She specialises in the subtle use of coloured threads and in her original designs always uses natural forms as a point of reference. Working mainly Milanese techniques (with additional Withof and Honiton), Sandi uses colour in a painterly way to describe form evocatively while still maintaining the integrity of the lace. This has necessitated the development of new techniques and innovative use of traditional ones to achieve the required effects.
Her award winning work has been widely exhibited at home and abroad. She has demonstrated traditional lacemaking at Valenciennes and at an exhibition in Paris which included her work, and which later toured France and Belgium. Sandi has won many prizes and several major awards. In 1993 at the John Bull Exhibition and Competition she won the Batsford Prize, the Nancy Armstrong Fan Award and the Ian Ferris 3-D Lace Award. At the same event in 1995 she again won the Batsford Prize and the Simon Dukes’ Presentation Award. She won the Visitors Choice Trophy in the exhibition class at the “Reflections” John Bull event in 1998. In 2002 Marjory Carter personally invited her to exhibit her work at the Society’s Rally held in Cheltenham that year.
Sandi’s work has also been featured on front covers and published in several magazines. Patricia Read and Lucy Kinkaid included her original work and featured it on the front cover of their book “New Braids and Designs in Milanese Lace”. Sandi’s own book “Special Effects in Bobbin Lace” was published in 1998, reprinted in 2000. Her second book “Alphabet Inspirations” was published in 2004. Currently Sandi belongs to a group of lacemakers interested in design and has been involved in producing patterns with Jean Eke which are included in two booklets: “Pomegranates in Bobbin Lace” parts 1 and 2.
And 2010? There are more booklets in the pipeline. Sandi will be teaching in Pennsylvania during May and teaching and lecturing in Brisbane in the autumn for the Australian Lace Guild at various AGM workshops. Before heading down under Sandi will be speaking about “Colour in Lace” at the Society’s late summer lace day at Lindfield near Haywards Heath on 4th September.
